The 10 day Jomolhari Circuit Trek is one of the iconic Himalayan adventures in Bhutan that has combined natural beauty with the richness of culture. The trip starts with a hiking heading into the wild zones of the Jomolhari valleys and begins in Paro. This journey brings you to thick forests, highland meadows, yakherder villages, and breathtaking mountain ranges above 4,800 meters.
The best part is camping in Jangothang, also known as the base camp of Mount Jomolhari (7,326m) where the spectacular scenery of the sacred mountain is the order of the day. Along the path, you will visit isolated villages like Lingshi, explore centuries-old monasteries, and immerse yourself in the Bhutan wilderness.
Its mixture of difficult paths, breathtaking views, and cultural experiences like the authentic Bhutan makes this trek a dream adventure for those who want to see and feel Bhutan in a different way. The 10-day Jomolhari circuit trek is not only a walk; it is a journey into the Himalayas.
Your 10 days Jomolhari circuit trek starts with a warm welcome at Paro, accompanied by a spectacular view of the Himalayas. Once you arrive at the airport, our team will greet you and transport you to a hotel. The remainder of the day is relaxation and acclimatization.
Assuming that there is time, have a slow walk around Paro town to see what it has to offer: traditional wooden houses, prayer flags blowing in the wind, and kind locals. You should have your first experience of Bhutanese cuisine and get ready for the activities that will follow. Get a comfortable stay in Paro before the trek starts as an overnight stay to enjoy the splendour of the valley and have some rest.
On the second day, have breakfast and then head to the most recognisable site in Bhutan, the Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Located prominently on a cliff, this religious location offers spiritual power and breathtaking scenery. The ascent takes several hours, passing through pine forests, waving prayer flags, and tranquil landscapes.
Once you reach the summit, marvel at the beauty of the monastery and the legends that inspired its name. Go back to Paro and spend the evening there. The day offers you experiences of higher elevations, as well as insights into the culture and spirituality of Bhutan. Staying over in a hotel and getting ready to start the exciting trek tomorrow.
On the third day, the adventure starts. There is a scenic drive leading to Shana, the point of departure of the trek. Here you will walk through thick pine and rhododendron trees, along the Paro River. The path starts through tiny villages and agricultural fields, with occasional yaks grazing serenely.
It is an air of crisp and fresh air and you get up in tiny bits, getting deeper into the wilderness of Bhutan. You will arrive at Thangthangkha after a few hours with the towering mountains around and the clean landscapes. You will spend your first night in a beautiful camp location, surrounded by nature sounds, as an introduction to the trek.
On the fourth day of the journey, today will lead you deeper into the Himalayas with breathtaking views. The road leads further through the Paro River, leading to the stunning scenes of Mount Jomolhari. You will go by ragged villages, yak herder camps, and wildflower-covered meadows. With a rise in the altitude, the air becomes thinner and the scenery more dramatic.
With a few hours of continuous hiking, you will be in Jangothang, the Jomolhari Base Camp. This is where the Jomolhari at the summit of the mountain is crowned by snow and is above you. It is among the most scenic campsites of the trek because it has spectacular sunsets and skies with dozens of stars.
On the fifth day, It is a much-needed rest and acclimatisation day in the base camp. You will not be sitting there in one place; short ascents can be made to adjacent ridges and lakes, which offer even nearer glimpses of Jomolhari and other local mountains. This is a heaven of photographers and lovers of nature.
See the grazing yaks, watch the blue sheep or just enjoy the silence of the high altitude. This day is useful to allow your body to acclimatize to the altitude besides enjoying the grandeur of the Bhutan mountains in their full glory. As the sun sets behind the snow peaks, the campsite becomes enchanted. One-night stay at Jangothang.
On the sixth day, Jangothang is not the destination, as you will be addressing the first major pass of the trek, at Nyele La (4,870m). The ascent is gradual and fulfilling, with panoramic mountain views on the summit. Even on clear days, you can see far-off mountains such as Jichu Drake.
The landscape begins to change as one moves down the pass and becomes open valleys and hills. Towards the end of the afternoon you will arrive at Lingshi, a lovely village with houses of stone and an ancient dzong (castle). The village is timeless and it provides a glimpse of remote life in Bhutan. The mountains frame the camp this night, and the sound of yak bells fills the air.
On the seventh day, the journey begins with a slow ascent to Yale La Pass, which is the highest point of the trip at 4,930 metres. The panoramic views of snowcapped Himalayan giants across the horizon compensate for the labour. Down it leads to high pastures in which the yaks are roaming freely and where the alpine flowers grow.
As you descend, the valley leads to lovely campsites by the riverside. You will arrive to Shodu in the evening, in a peaceful meadow. Peacefulness is beyond comprehension here, as there are high cliffs and falling waterfalls. Sleep in the open-air night sky, enjoying the challenging but accomplished adventure of this day.
Your last day of trekking is a combination of landscapes. The path winds down through birch and rhododendron forests, and the air is filled with the earthly fragrances. You will go through streams and meadows, and you will see some wildlife. When you get down the altitude, you will feel the warmth come back and you will also find the greenery becoming thick.
In the late afternoon you will reach Barshong, where there are still ruins of an old dzong which rise against a mountainous background. This is the final camp of the journey, and it is a comfortable place to stay. Spend your evening beside the campfire, reflect on your amazing Himalayan experience, and head back to civilisation the next day.
After breakfast, farewell to the trekking group and enjoy the scenic drive into Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu. The journey passes through lush valleys, rivers, and traditional villages. In Thimphu, sights such as the King’s Memorial Chorten, Tashichho Dzong, and local craft markets are worth exploring.
The city is a mixture of form and function, and the pace here is quite a contrast to the mountains. You will then enjoy Bhutanese dishes at a local restaurant before chilling in a comfy hotel. It’s an ideal day to celebrate the conclusion of your trek while soaking up the lively yet serene vibe of Bhutan’s capital with the nation’s vibrant culture and hospitality on you. Overnight in Thimphu.
Your journey to Bhutan ends today. After breakfast, you will be back to Paro for your departure flight. Take in your last views of the valleys with their fluttering prayer flags, farmhouses, and majestic hills. At the airport, say goodbye to your guide as well as to Bhutan.
This trek has etched many memories into your mind: the snow-capped peaks, the remote villages, the peaceful monasteries, and the heartfelt smiles of the Bhutanese. Though your Bhutanese journey comes to an end, its spirit will stay with you forever. Keep the spirit alive within your grateful and adventure-filled heart.
